Last night I found myself watching the Luis Buñuel classic Belle De Jour. If you’re not into subtitles then it may not be for you, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus it’s a significant film in fashion as many of the outfits worn by the main character Séverine were designed by none other than Yeves Saint Lauent. Séverine is a well to do woman who, despite her innocence, decides to visit a brothel and she eventually gets ‘in on the action’ one might say. Her style and elegance is what inspires this post, but in particular the black shirt dress with the white collar and cuffs that she wears at the end of the film.
I love it. It’s so simple and almost reminiscent of a school girl’s dress which draws us back to Séverine’s innocence. Many celebrities have also been seen sporting the Belle De Jour look themselves including Kate Middleton, Ariana Grande and Julia Roberts to name a few. After seeing the film I decided I want in on the action (I’m talking about the dress not the brothel by the way) and had a little look online to see where I can get my hands on one.
First stop: Lavish Alice. They have one near on exactly the same as the Belle De Jour dress however you might want to save your wages/student loans because it comes in at £58. It’s also a pre-order only and is dispatched in late February so bare that in mind. A beautiful dress none the less.
Second stop: Miss Selfridge. Although this one is a different shape to the original dress, it still with holds the black and white schoolgirl look. It has a more modern vibe and would look great just as an everyday dress with some boots or to go out in with heels and a bold necklace. This one is priced at £35
Third stop: Missguided. On Missguided, they do have a plain black dress with a white collar but I quite like the playsuit take on the dress. With a white collar and white long sleeves, it’s a bit more playful than the original dress and you won’t have to worry about having a Marilyn Monroe moment in the winter winds! This playsuit comes in at £24.99, so it won’t break the bank.
Final destination: Asos. Harboring a more laid back style, Asos offer a loose fitting version of the tailored dress. If you’re a cool and casual lady, this could be perfect for you and it’s currently on sale at £17.50.
My personal favourite would probably be the Missguided playsuit. What’s yours?
